Balanced salt solutions can provide an environment that maintains the structural and physiological integrity of cells in vitro. Dulbecco’s Phosphate Buffered Saline (DPBS) is a balanced salt solution used for a variety of cell culture applications, such as washing cells before dissociation, transporting cells or tissue samples, diluting cells for counting, or as an inorganic base for standard media preparation.

DPBS is a balanced salt solution used for the handling and culturing of mammalian cells. DPBS is used to to irrigate, wash, and dilute mammalian cells. Phosphate buffering maintains the pH in the physiological range.
As isotonic solutions, both PBS and HBSS maintain the flow of water from inside and outside the same cell or tissue. PBS is a buffered solution, while HBSS is a balanced salt solution. Both have different ingredients and forms. PBS is mostly found in liquid form, while HBSS can come in powder or liquid form.
