Balanced salt solutions including PBS, DPBS, and HBSS are formulated for the irrigation, washing, and the dilution of a variety of cell types which are designed to provide a pH buffering system and maintaining the osmotic balance when using a cell culture medium. PBS is a water-based salt solution with a simple formulation. It is isotonic and non-toxic for most cells. It includes sodium chloride and phosphate buffer and is formulated to prevent osmotic shock while maintaining living cells’ water balance.
DPBS includes potassium chloride which is slightly different than PBS. DPBS is available in a larger variety of formulations and is used in biological applications, water-based and includes sodium chloride and phosphate buffer.
HBSS is used as buffer systems in cell culture media, HBSS helps maintain optimal physiological pH. Because HBSS is low in reactivity, it is often used atmospheric conditions and may be used to maintain osmolality and pH in biological applications.
